Well it's time to do the holiday dinner justice! Don't split the family up amongst two tables! Don't settle for a table that wiggles and rocks! For the memories that last a lifetime accept nothing less than the best!

Nearly all Amish dining room tables are available with extensions so the family can always eat together! Some carry up to 20 extensions for maximum versatility. Furthermore, many of the gear slides used for extensions are equalizers, which allows for the table to be opened when just pulling on one end! This convenient function requires only one person to prepare the table and insert the extensions.

In addition, an Amish dining room table does not wiggle, shake, or rock! Amish craftsmen are perhaps the most reputable woodworkers left in existence. Their knowledge of wood, and their handcraftsmanship is second to none. In the construction of our dining tables, Amish woodworkers use one of two methods when installing the legs to ensure maximum stability: 1) the legs are inserted into the table frame with a mortise and tenon joint, or 2) the legs are bolted to a v-groove corner block that is glued and screwed in place. Both styles provide extreme sturdiness and strength.

Keep in mind, the dining room table is a central part of the Amish lifestyle, and as such Amish craftsmen understand better than anyone how important the memories are that will be had around the tables they build. In July 2004, when the Stone Hearth Restaurant opened its doors as an original organic restaurant in Monterey, Virgina, restauranteur Pam Flynn believed that every aspect of her new venture should be characterized by authenticity.

At the center of the dining experience was her mouth-watering entrees made from the finest and freshest organic ingredients. The artwork included original paintings from her husband's art gallery. The centerpieces were beautiful flowers cut fresh from her garden. And her choice of dining room chair was the New England Windsor Dining Room Chair.

She purchased forty of the chairs from DutchCrafters. Made by the Amish in solid oak wood, the chairs were given a warm, yet contemporary look with a low sheen antique black paint. The Windsor chair dates back to the 17th century! It is said that King George III first sat on a Windsor chair in a cottage while fox hunting. Impressed by the chairs comfort and design, the King had a number crafted to be placed in the Windsor castle. And so we have the Windsor chair!

Today, exact styles of the Windsor chair differ from England to the United States. They also differ provincially in the United States. For example, craftsmen in Philadelphia are recognized for their plain tapered legs, while craftsmen in New England pioneered the continuous-arm style. DutchCrafters carries nearly 150 different styles of Windsor chairs and benches, supporting a rich history of the Windsor style’s development and refinement!

The Windsor chair must be very carefully crafted for maximum quality. Woodworkers use slender spindles that are fastened into tapered sockets in the seat. They join the chairs outward-slanting legs with immensely sturdy wedged tenon joints, and traditionally, handcrafted stretchers connect the front and back legs, while a crossbar connects both stretchers.

Our dining tables are handcrafted of solid wood, through and through. No veneers or particleboards are used on any of these solid wood dining tables. They are individually handcrafted and made to order in an Amish woodworking shop, not built on an assembly line or in a factory.

The dining table is a central place in the life and faith of the Amish. Gathering around the table, blessing the food, sharing a meal together, talking and telling stories - these are the experiences that take place around these handcrafted masterpieces. It is this type of experience that the Amish hope you will also enjoy. Amish dining tables are built with the utmost care and integrity.

Our dining tables have a number of design features that showcase our Amish craftsmen's deep understanding of wood and furniture making. All of our dining tables have a solid one-inch-thick table top for durability as well as aesthetics. They also include solid wood steam bent aprons with a slight gap inserted where the extensions fit to allow room for the natural contraction and expansion of solid wood. A number of our dining tables have apron gap covers to disguise the gap. Generally, our Amish woodworkers use one of two assembly designs on table legs: 1) the legs are inserted into the table frame with a mortise and tenon joint or 2) the legs are bolted to a v-groove corner block that is glued and screwed in place. Both styles provide extreme sturdiness, strength and durability.

Along with their solid design and heirloom quality manufacturing, our Amish dining tables are available in many styles and sizes. We offer leg, pedestal and trestle tables. We have elegant Queen Anne tables, casual farm tables and sleek Mission and Shaker tables, among many other styles. Our wide range of sizes offers options for those with tight spaces - very difficult to find in this age of over-sized furniture - as well as those preparing for large parties or family gatherings. Nearly all of our tables are available with extensions, some with up to 20 extensions for maximum versatility.

Most of our leg tables have wooden slides and our pedestal tables have gear slides. This convenient function requires only one person to prepare the table with additional space and insert the extensions.

Mission style furniture, often grouped with the Arts and Crafts movement, started being made in the mid 19th century. Mission furniture is known for its strength, beauty, and permanency. It is plain and simple, with little decoration. Chairs, tables and beds are made with wood slats, and legs are usually straight. Pulls, latches, and hinges are usually made of pewter.

The philosophy of the Arts and Crafts movement of hand-made products of integrity, utility, and simple style fits well with Amish values and makes mission-style furniture a natural choice for Amish woodworkers. No one is certain how Mission furniture got its name. Some believe it is related to the philosophy of the movement that furniture should be functional and have a "mission" to be used.
